Frequently Asked Questions

Recruitment

How do I join the club? We conduct only one intake annually, during the month of August, via our Beginners' Course for most members. The Beginners' Course is not to be missed as the fundamentals are extremely crucial to every aspect of the training.

For experienced kendokas, please contact us directly via our email or members.
Any prior experience or level of fitness needed? No. That is what trainings are for. Of course it would be a bonus to have them. ;)
Where can I sign up/join the mailing list? A link will be provided near the Matriculation Fair period for the online sign-up form. Otherwise, do not hesitate to email us with any of your queries!

To join our 2011 intake, please leave your contact details at NUSKK Sign Up Form. The form will close on 22nd August after the commencement of the Beginner Course. Please email us directly after that! (:

Costs and Equipment

What are the costs involved? Firstly, there are no course fees for kendo. There are club fees at $20 annually to maintain club resources however. For beginners, you are only required to purchase the attire (gi and hakama) and shinai. These will cost around $150 depending on the Japanese exchange rate.

For the bogu (armor), it is only used in Advanced Classes and you will only be asked to purchase it after the Beginner Course. It is estimated to cost about $500.
Where can I purchase my equipment? For new members, your equipment will be provided by the club early into the Beginner Course. After which you will be able to place your orders via the club forum or through our QM, Shermaine. We will inform you when it is needed.

Training

How long is the Beginners' Course? It will be held over 3-months from the start of the semester. You are expected to attend most, if not all, the training sessions conducted.
What is the attire for training? Any comfortable sports attire will suffice at the start of the Beginner Course. After 1 month of training, the gi and hakama will be worn during training.

For Advanced Classes, the bogu is required along with the gi and hakama.
What if I am unable to attend the upcoming training? Do inform us beforehand either via our email or the respective people in-charge.
What if there are timetable clashes with training slots? Unfortunately, the training timings are fixed and there are no make-up classes involved. Do try to catch up in the subsequent trainings! It has happened to some of our seniors and it is possible to keep up. :)

3rd NUS Kendo Championships Series 1

By Nella

After months of vigorous training, the NUS Championships is open once again for its new batch of contenders! Most importantly, it is time to pick up the pace once again after ICT in January. Since MPSH 6 was not available that day, we decided to have our first ever internal series in NUS High!

Pre-tournament shots

NUS High on 9th March

Before the matches

Of course, not forgetting our juniors who have been training hard since their Beginners' Course, Series 1 is their first opportunity to have a go on a real shiai. Ganbatte!

Happy juniors at their inaugural tournament! :)

This time, we started off with the robin matches for ladies with the men's eliminations on the other court concurrently. Kendokas from NYP graciously came over to help out for the officiating duties as well. Despite the heat and humidity, many of the participants put up a strong fight throughout the matches, especially the juniors!

Liying vs Anthea

Nem vs Nasution

We summed up the day with an exciting match between Kenneth and Yonghe! Congratulations to all finalists and also, to all the juniors who have successfully gone through their first tournament after half a year of training!

Finals: Kenneth vs Yong He

Prize Presentation Ceremony

A big thank you to all Senseis, seniors and fellow kendokas from NYP who have taken time off their to come to the tournament! See you at Series 2!

1st Singapore Inter Club Kendo Competition 2012

By Yong He

The name “Youth kendo tournament” may sound very unfamiliar to many of our new members but that was the predecessor of the current Inter-club tournament (ICT). It is the only tournament in Singapore till date that offers an opportunity for members of the various clubs to compete against one another representing their own clubs. It is the most exciting event for a budding kendoka in Singapore. The thought of representing the club and the school in a competitive event is both exhilarating and nerve wrecking.

Opening Ceremony

Ladies Match

I remembered back in 2009 when I first watched my seniors compete in YKT (also held in SMU) and thinking one day I hope I can prove myself worthy to fight for the school too. I got my chance in 2010 and took part in my first YKT. I did not do well but it motivated me to work harder. It became every captain’s dream and goal for the club to perform well in YKT. For many years, victory had eluded NUS Kendo Club at YKT but we have never stopped trying. 3 years after the first YKT that I have seen, we are back in SMU competing again for NUS. I am pleased to report that NUS did well in the inaugural ICT, clinching the Men’s Individuals Champion and Men’s Team Joint 3rd. Several of our members have also clinched the Fighting Spirit award for their exemplary performance.

Finals: Xiang Jing vs Yong He

Men's Individual Champion: Yong He

Fighting Spirit Award: Anthea

It was a long but enjoyable journey for me. I have represented NUS for 3 times in my time as a student of NUS and have had many lasting and enjoyable memories. There are some parting words that I would like to leave behind. To all my dear friends and teammates who have fought beside me all this while, I am honored to have trained and fought with a bunch of people who love the club as much as I do. To the opponents that I have fought with, thanks for all the fights. Kendo cannot be done alone. As we compete and train, we sharpen each other’s skills and form deep mutual respect for each other. Lastly, to my upcoming juniors, my journey of competing for NUS is coming to an end, but the journey for NUS must still go on. I urge all the juniors to strive for the opportunity to represent the school. I promise you, your journey will never be dull. Train hard and never forget your roots. Fight for the school and also respect others. Support each other so no one will ever fight alone. Be humble and always seek to improve yourself both as a kendoka and as a person. I hope all of you will enjoy your own journeys as much as I have.

End of Year Training Camp 2011

By Nella

The End of Year Training Camp was conducted from the 28th to 31st of December.

Shortly after Christmas, members of NUSKK will gather for a compulsory training camp to kick off the next series of sessions before school reopens. The focus of the camp will range from basic kihon, wazas to keiko at varying parts of the camp. In addition, it also marks the graduation date of our juniors from their Beginners' Course! The course was led by Yong He and Weber this year.

For this camp, we stayed in Raffles Hall, a residence hall in the school campus near the dojo. Over the period of 4 days, the club was fortunate to have visitors from the other affiliate clubs and our Senseis to guide us during our trainings.

One of the highlights of the camp would be the team matches on the last training of the camp! Besides motivating each and every one of the members to fight hard for their respective teams, this is also held in preparation for the upcoming Inter-Club Kendo Tournament. We had a mock shiai prior to the team matches as well!

Here are some of the photos taken during the camp!

2nd NUS Kendo Championships Series 4

By Jia Hui and Nella

As we work towards another new year ahead, the 2nd NUS Kendo Championships concludes with Series 4 on 16th December! On the final lap of the internal series, here comes another round of awesome matches as our participants get to face a new group of opponents again!

The event lineup is as follows:
Opening Ceremony
Ladies Elimination
Mens Elimination
Finals
Closing and Prize Presentation

Here are some snapshots before the tournament!

Without further ado, let's hear a short reflection from Jiahui!

"When I submitted my name for this tournament, I was pretty much just jumping on the bandwagon and not having any expectations of myself, especially after my prior poor performance during LKC. Paradoxically, it was this “come what may” attitude that dissipated the jittery feelings that I usually get right before tournaments, and thus I was able to enter the matches without any pressure or tension.

Start of the Shiai

Ladies Match

My matches during this tournament were against Melissa and Nella, and here I am thankful for the shiai experiences gained through fighting these matches. Both matches entered encho, the state of “sudden death”, which made these shiai experiences particularly important, as I learnt the importance of staying focused even if the matches becomes long-drawn.

Nasution vs Jingyang

Closing of Series 4 and Prize Presentation

Overall, taking part in the intra-club series, which had spanned 9 months, has been an invaluable part of my kendo journey. And I am grateful for the opportunity to learn about my weaknesses, so that I may try to correct them before the next tournament comes up! :)"

Congratulations to Jiahui and all winners of the series, and thank you to Senseis and all those who have helped to make this tournament possible! :)
